爬上木头小山去到毛毯集市，

当我们到了，会得到什么东西呢？

  这首童谣描述的似乎是一个去集市的场景，在这里fair就是有集市、庙会的意思，不禁让我想起一首特别有名的歌曲《Scarborough Fair》原是一首古老的英国民歌，其起源可一直追溯到中世纪。斯卡布罗集市(Scarborough Fair)本是由于维京人经常的登陆，作一些交换而形成的一个定期集市，在几百年的时间里，每年的秋天持续一个半月，现在的英国，还有这么一个小镇。

hill [hil] n. 小山

blanket [ˈblæŋkɪt] n. 毛毯，毯子

fair [feə] n. 集市

bucket ['bʌkit] n. 桶

Pennyworth ['peniwə:θ] adj. 值一便士的

gee up [dʒi:ʌp]  英语中让马快跑吆喝的声音，类似用“驾”

Dobbin ['dɔbin] 马的名字

1.俚语kick the bucke“翘辫子”起源于"上吊"，因为试图悬梁自尽的人通常会选择站在一个木桶之类的东西上，将脖子伸进绳圈里，然后决然踢翻脚下的支撑物，告别这个世界。

2.pass away

3.pass on

很遗憾听到你妈妈刚刚去世的消息。

pass away 和 pass on 都是暗指过世。

4.lose one's life

一般指由于意外事故、战争等不可抗力而造成的死亡，为意外死亡。

他是怎么死的？

5.depart

depart 也是死亡的委婉说法，意思是灵魂离开了肉体的存在去往另一个世界了。

周恩来同志和我们永别了。

6.expire

expire的意思是呼气，这里引申为呼出最后一口气，暗指死亡。

The patient expired early this morning.

这位病人今天早晨去世了。

7.perish

perish 指的是非自然死亡。

Many soldiers perish in battle.

很多士兵在战斗中死去了。

8.go to meet one’s Maker

注意这个Maker要大写，有造物主的意思，所以去见造物主了就是灵魂回归了，也就是死亡的委婉说法，就像我们也会说某人“去见马克思了”。

He knew that he came into the world with nothing and that he would go to meet his Maker with empty hands.

他知道他是一无所有的来到世上，也将会两手空空的离开人间。
